HOW TO DRESS FOR THE UNILAG WEATHER

With the increasing effects of global warming across the world, the heat waves are hotter than ever before. 2016 is the hottest year ever in history, followed by 2015… This shows a steady progression in the temperature increase.
Nigeria records a temperature range of about 25° – 34° all year long, this is not the interesting part; the interesting part is that the temperature increases as the sun rises and as such we tend to have cool mornings and as the sun comes out the temperatures start to increase. Also, according to weather forecasters; July is going to be one of the coldest months of the year in Lagos. Unilag is at the heart of Lagos so we would be experiencing first hand the interesting variation of the Lagos temperature, by the way who else feels that the sun is hotter on Campus? Especially when you have to take long walks from your faculty to gate/your hall of residence or vice versa.
There have been many jokes about the Nigerian sun, some wondering if the ‘trumpet’ had blown and non of us made it… But one thing most of us don’t find funny is how to dress appropriately for this mixed weather, this could be an uphill task sometimes as when you dress according to the weather in the morning, you end up looking/feeling ridiculous once the sun comes out. A good number of us just dress down in shorts and tank tops and the likes so as to avoid the heat, some occasions and lecturers require you to show up appropriately dressed regardless of the weather hence; in this post we would be giving you tips that would help remain stylish despite the confusing weather.

1. THE THREE PIECE WITHOUT THE THIRD PIECE
In the case of a presentation, a defense, or a formal presentation you are at liberty to do this. You can actually hang the jacket against your shoulder or hold it on your arm once the heat gets unbearable or at the end of your presentation. Moreover, you could totally exclude the jacket altogether… Ahan! is this not formal enough?

2. HANG YOUR SWEATER THE FRENCH STYLE
While planing your outfit in the morning you were feeling a little bit chilly, hence you thought it would be appropriate to throw on one of those your favorite sweaters and you did, but by 12noon you started to wonder if that was such a good idea… Not to worry, you can lose the sweater and still look stylish and smart, hang it around your shoulders and look like a French man (we all know they are one of the most stylish men on the planet so…)

3. THE KIMONO MAGIC
As we have seen the kimonos take over campus, they are also very appropriate for the Nigerian weather, the beauty of these babies is that they are usually made from light fabrics hence don’t generate much heat, also you can wear something very comfy underneath, furthermore, once the temperature changes come you can unfasten them if they have ropes.

4. SEMI-FORMAL
The beauty about semi-formal styles is that you are comfortable and at the same time can’t be accused of being informally or casually dressed. You show up looking smart and sharp at the same time because you are comfortable in your outfit and you know you are prepared to take on the weather changes. You might want to roll up your sleeves to allow you more movement, get more work done and move from place to place with ease. When going semi formal, your shoes are very important, they must be easy to wear and comfortable to walk in… (Cab is now 50 Naira lol.)

5. THE CHIFFON DRESSES
The ladies have found this beautiful coping mechanism, they have adopted the use of Chiffon fabrics to making formal wears, they show up properly dressed and do not feel the heat of the weather as such, I find this very comforting as it is one struggle to have so much makeup blocking the skin pores on your face, and another to stop the sweat from ruining your look, at least let’s find a solution for the body.

There you have it guys… Hope we have been able to help you dress better for the Unilag weather?
